Penang Bite

Street food is a way of life for most Malaysians. You and me might see it as a novelty but to Penang, dining at pop-up street restaurants is an everyday occurrence and one that you should certainly not miss, no matter your budget. For thrifty backpackers and wealthy world travellers alike, it gives you an affordable way to sample authentic dishes and truly see the real culture of Penang. The thing is, with high-end restaurants and hotel dining rooms, you don’t really get to see the culture surrounding you, whereas street food allows you to get a real taste of Penang’s life; after all, isn’t that why we travel? Also, you can try eating with your hands, which is far harder and much messier than you can imagine!

Sri Weld Ali Nasi Lemak

Walking around Penang Heritage and banking area is kind of fun and exploring. You can find lots of good foods while enjoying the heritage scenery.Dubbed as one of the best Nasi Lemak operator in the town, I have been patronizing this stall years ago, and seeing the price grew from RM1.50 or RM1.30 to RM1.80 per pack currently. Ali Nasi Lemak still serves the conventional nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves (not newspaper!), and you will see an exodus of people herding the small stall during peak hours.

A great thing about Ali Nasi Lemak is that they prepared their rice using coconut milk, and not plain rice was served, which they deserved the name of authentic nasi lemak. If I were to nitpick, the nasi lemak I tasted today was inferior to the nasi lemak I tasted years ago, as the nasi lemak back dated years ago possess nicer sambal. The portion remained the same though, served nice to stuff a corner of your stomach.A pack of Nasi Lemak cost only RM1.50.
  • Fried anchovies and egg (Ikan bilis dan telur, normally you see the marking of BT)
  • Prawn (Udang, normally marked as U)
  • Chicken ( Ayam, normally marked as A)
  • Cutter fish ( Sotong, normally marked as S)
  • Plain ( just sambal and half pc of boiled egg)

The stall in located in the center of the main entrance. You will not miss this stall if you been to Sri Weld food court. Pnang Char Koay Teow

The Penang char koay teow is long revered by many, travellers and locals alike, and though this hawker dish is available throughout any of the states in Malaysia, none seemed able to live up to the Penang version.Loved by many and one of the must-eat Penang hawker fares when visiting this northern state in Malaysia, the Penang char koay teow is a combination of seafood, pork, vegetables and sauces that perfectly add flavours to the otherwise plain, and rather tasteless, flat rice noodles.

This aunty is probably the most famous Penangite in our country. One might even label her a celebrity. She’s known for her manners and of course, her food.Notorious for her arrogance but can’t be denied that her Char Kway Teow is good in terms of taste. Smoky wok fragrance, NOT greasy and wet, big juicy prawns, plump bloody cockles (hell yes!), chinese wax sausages and whatever else you would expect from a satisfying plate of Char Kway Teow!

Penang Famous Apom Special @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang

Undeniably, Apom is one of the delicacy you could easily find in Penang!
It could be served in the morning, tea break or even supper.
So here I'm going to introduce one of the Penang famous Apom Special.

Apom Telur Cheese + Butter = Apom Special - RM3.00

The Indian boss made the apom special using traditional method - claypot and charcoal.
Interestingly, you would notice that there're burning charcoal on top and bottom.
With that, the heat would be evenly distributed.

With the aroma of butter and egg,
saltiness of cheese complementing the sweetness from the condensed milk...

That makes a YUMMY Apom Special!

Right Opposite of Jalan Seang Tek.

Finding carpark would be a real headache in that busy road.
So you might want to park your car at Jalan Kuantan.

Jalan Dato Keramat (near Times Square)
Monday-Sunday 5.00pm to 9.00pm

Enjoy and do let us know how you think about it! ;)
